Nine

By the time Cal crossed the grounds to the bungalow, the moon had risen above the treetops. A bat flashed past his head, its wings slicing the dark like scimitars. The haunting cry of an owl shimmered through the night.

He’d spent the better part of two hours with Harris, gently urging him to call it a night and go to bed. The old hunter hadn’t looked well tonight—not really sick, but sad and fatigued. At sixty-six, his rough life and hard drinking had begun to catch up with him, and it showed. Cal had been worried enough to stay with him and walk him to his private room in the rear of the lodge. It would be a relief to get him away from this place and out on the Serengeti with no hotel bar to keep him up drinking at night.

The bungalow was dark. Hopefully Megan would be asleep. She’d been tired, too—and prickly, he recalled. He should have known better than to bring up the idea of flying her home for therapy. But she’d given him an opening. He’d seized it and come away with his whiskers singed.

He’d learned where she stood on the question of going home. But he also knew something Megan didn’t. She needed serious help—and going back to Darfur without that help could send her spiraling into an emotional abyss.

Unlocking the door, he stepped inside. Moonlight fell between the parted curtains, softening the darkness. Relief lifted his mood as he glanced through the mosquito netting and saw the slight form raising the covers. At least she’d trusted him enough to share the bed. Or maybe she’d wanted him close by to protect her from the lurking monsters in her dreams.

Moving closer, he gazed down at her. She lay curled with her lovely rump toward his side of the bed, sleeping as sweetly as a child. Something tightened around Cal’s heart. Whatever phantoms threatened that innocent slumber, he wanted to be there to drive them away. He understood himself, and he knew these protective feelings toward her might not last for long, not when he still had so many questions and doubts. But while Megan was suffering, he couldn’t turn his back and walk away from her.

He undressed in the dark. Clad in his skivvies and undershirt, he walked around the bed. He slept raw at home and had planned to do the same on this trip. If he’d foreseen that he’d be sharing a room—and a bed—with a woman he’d resolved to treat like a kid sister, he’d have brought along some pajamas.

He did have a pack of condoms in his bag, which he’d bought at the hotel gift shop in Arusha after making plans to take Megan on safari—and hopefully seduce her. But they were locally made, so he couldn’t count on their reliability. Given the present arrangement, maybe that was just as well.

Doing his best not to wake her, he lifted the blanket and slid over the top sheet onto his side of the bed.
